The AOBTA® Lunch & Learn Webinar Series

Sound and Asian Medicine

Presented by Richard Gold, MSTOM, LAc.

Join Richard Gold for an exploration of the role of sound in Chinese Medicine.

Sound is ubiquitous. It surrounds us here on earth. There is sound in interstellar space. Satellites pick up sound vibrations from our Sun.
Recent scientific research has detected a consistent hum on the planet Mars. All these sounds have effects.

Sound is among the most transformative and healing energies on the planet. Sound can:

  • relax us and make us calm,
  • move us to great heights of emotion,
  • restore balance and harmony, and
  • help make us healthy and well.

About the Presenter:

Richard M. Gold Ph.D., L.Ac. graduated from Oberlin College in 1972. Since his 1978 graduation from the New England School of Acupuncture, he has devoted the lion’s share of his professional career to the study, practice, researching, teaching and publishing in the field of Traditional East Asian Medicine.

Dr. Gold was one of the four founders of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) in 1986 and served on the Board and faculty of the school for over 25 years.

During a research sabbatical in Japan in 1986, Dr. Gold was led to Sensei Kyoshi Kato, the developer of Seitai Shiatsu. Kato Sensei accepted Dr. Gold as a student and taught his work and theories to him. This work is featured in Dr. Gold’s recently published book, ‘Seitai (Lymphatic) Shiatsu, Cupping and Gua Sha for a Healthy Immune System’.

Also on this trip, he met with Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama in Tokyo. This original meeting led to a long-term relationship with Dr. Motoyama and Dr. Gold’s connection to the California Institute for Human Sciences (, the graduate school established by Dr. Motoyama in Encinitas, California. AT CIHS, Dr. Gold served first as a faculty member, then as a researcher using the AMI technology and currently as a Board member.

Dr. Gold was one of the original individuals who introduced Traditional Thai Massage to the Western World, starting in 1989. His book, ‘Thai Massage: A Traditional Medical Technique’ was the first professionally published English language book in the field. This book, now in it’s 2nd edition, also has Portuguese and Japanese editions.

In 2012, Dr. Gold along with his creative partner, Yuval Ron created Metta Mindfulness Music, a music production company devoted to creating original music based on ancient wisdom traditions and modern neuroscience. Since it’s inception, two of Metta Mindfulness Music productions have been nominated for Grammys.

Currently, Dr. Gold continues in a private practice of Chinese Medicine and acupuncture in San Diego.
