AOBTA® Board of Directors | Election 2020

This year we are electing the Vice President, Treasurer/Secretary, Director of Membership, Director of Events, Legislative Director, and Director of COSP.

 

The Elections Committee is now accepting board nominations and candidate applications!

 

According to the Rules, Guidelines and Procedures (RGP's), Article VIII, Section 1, the Elections Committee shall call for nominations from the Voting members of the Organization  (Associate, Certified Practitioner, Registered Instructor, Certified Instructor, and Retired) and shall review and consider the qualifications of all proposed candidates, approving for nomination only those candidates who satisfy the qualifications specified by the established criteria for candidacy for the office for which they are candidates.

Special Note: the Director of COSP is nominated and elected by the COSP members.

A nominee for any National Office within the organization must be a Voting member in good standing, with no grievances pending against him or her at the time of nomination. All nominees must meet the qualifying standards set for the various positions on the Board of Directors and published at the time of the Call for Nominations.

 

A candidate's nomination packet must include all of the following and must be submitted to the National Office by May, 15, 2020.

  • 2 Nominations from Voting members of the organization (one of the nominations may be by the candidate)
  • Letters of Recommendation for the candidate from the members that are nominating the candidate
  • A completed Candidate Application Form
  • A Letter of Intent by the candidate, stating willingness to serve and the reasons and aims for seeking the specific office.
  • The Candidate's resume
Election Timeline
  • April 2020 | Election cycle is launched
  • May 15, 2020 | Deadline for Candidates to submit completed Nomination Packets
  • June 1, 2020 | Election ballots will be presented to the Voting members (ballots and voting will only happen if there is more than one candidate for any position on the board)
  • June 15, 2020 | Deadline for Voting members to complete the ballots
  • June 16, 2020 | Election results are announced to the board of directors and the candidates
  • July 1, 2020 | Election results are announced to the membership and the  term of office for the new board of directors begins

Steps for Nominations and Candidates

How do I nominate a member for a position on the board of directors? 

  1. Begin by talking with the person you would like to nominate to make sure they want to be nominated and that they meet the eligibility requirements for the position you wish to nominate them for. 
  2. Prepare a letter of recommendation - which is a statement about why you are nominating the candidate for the position.
  3. Complete the Candidate Nomination Form (the form includes fields where you can either upload or copy and paste your letter of recommendation directly into the form).

How do I apply as a candidate for a position on the board of directors?

  1. Begin by reviewing the position descriptions and eligibility requirements to determine whether or not you are eligible as a candidate.
  2. Be sure you are familiar with the organization's Mission, Vision, Bylaws and RGP's.
  3. You may nominate yourself as a candidate or you can be nominated by 2 Voting members of the organization.
  4. Prepare your Letter of Intent. The Letter of Intent is your statement describing why your are seeking to serve on the board of directors and the reasons and goals you have for serving in the specific board position.
  5. Prepare your resume
  6. Complete the Candidate Application Form. The form includes fields for uploading your Letter of Intent and your resume.

 Board Position Descriptions

 

Vice President

The Vice-President shall preside over meetings in the absence of the President, and replace the President in case of his or her inability to function in office for the duration of the unexpired term or until a successor is elected and shall have such powers as are necessary for the functioning of the Organization, as prescribed by the Rules, Guidelines and Procedures, within the scope of the Bylaws of the Organization.

Duties:

  1. Shall preside over meetings in the absence of the President, and replace the President in the event of her/his inability to function in office, for the duration of the unexpired term or until a successor is elected.
  2. Shall serve as ex-officio member of various committees listed below and shall oversee various committees of The Organization, but shall not have a vote in the matters of those committees except to break a tie vote.
  3. Shall act as Chairperson for the State Chapter Committee and oversee the functioning of the Congress of Representatives.
  4. Shall run State Representative Elections in coordination with the Elections Committee.
  5. Shall act as Chairperson for the Awards Committee.
  6. Shall collect and cast proxy votes on behalf of absentee Voting members at the National Membership Meeting.
  7. Shall serve on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.
  8. Shall Carry out Organization business between board meetings.
  9. Shall have such other responsibilities and powers as directed by the Board of Directors within the scope of the Bylaws of The Organization.
Treasurer/Secretary

Shall Chair the Finance Committee and shall have such powers as are necessary for the functioning of the Organization, as prescribed by the Rules, Guidelines, and Procedures, within the scope of the Bylaws of the Organization.

Duties:

  1. Shall be responsible for the following:
    1. Financial planning and budget allocation.
    2. Supervision of the general funds of The Organization, as shall be appropriate for the proper functioning of The Organization, in conjunction with the Executive Committee.
    3. Have all expenditures in excess of $500.00 approved by the President.
    4. Communicate regularly with the administrative office staff to manage the daily financial affairs of keeping the office and The Organization running and stable.
    5. Serve as the Chairperson of the Finance Committee.
    6. Prepare annual financial reports for the Board of Directors, with the assistance of a CPA as needed.
    7. Having tax forms filed in a timely fashion, with the assistance of a CPA as needed.
  2. Shall be bonded for an amount to be determined by the Board of Directors.
  3. Shall make arrangements for board meetings in conjunction with the President and the Director of Events.
  4. Shall participate in the planning of the National Convention in conjunction with the Director of Events and the Convention Committee.
  5. Shall serve on the Executive Committee.
  6. Shall carry out Organization business between board meetings.
  7. Shall have such other responsibilities and powers as directed by the Board of Directors within the scope of the Bylaws of The Organization.
 
Director of Membership

Shall Chair the Membership Committee and shall have such powers as are necessary for the functioning of the Organization, as prescribed by the Rules, Guidelines, and Procedures, within the scope of the Bylaws of the Organization.

Duties:

  1. Shall chair the Membership Committee, consisting of the State Chapter Membership Chairs, State Representatives, and others; which is responsible for the following:
    1. Overseeing the membership application process that ensures that all members are qualified for their respective level of membership as defined by the Education Committee.
    2. Development of membership recruitment and retention strategies.
    3. Conducting regular membership surveys to assess the needs and concerns of the membership.
    4. Updating the membership application packets, the Welcome Packets, and membership informational materials.
  2. Shall oversee the membership data collection and reporting at the National Office.
  3. Shall prepare the agenda and chair the National Membership Meeting during the National Convention.
  4. Shall serve as a member of the ABT Forms Committee.
  5. Shall oversee and support the State Chapter Membership Chairs.
  6. Shall oversee the online Membership Database.
  7. Shall be an available contact for members and potential members.
  8. Shall carry out Organization business between board meetings.
  9. Shall have such other responsibilities and powers as directed by the Board of Directors within the scope of the Bylaws of The Organization.

 
Director of Events

Shall chair the Events Committee and shall have such powers as are necessary for the functioning of the Organization, as prescribed by the Rules, Guidelines, and Procedures, within the scope of the Bylaws of the Organization.

Duties:

  1. Shall Chair the Events Committee.
  2. Shall oversee the Convention Committee, but is not required to Chair the Convention Committee.
  3. Shall assist in the planning of board meetings.
  4. Shall assist in the planning of Regional Workshops.
  5. Shall identify opportunities for cooperative events with other organizations.
  6. Shall serve as a resource for members that are planning events and explore the possibilities for AOBTA to support those events.
  7. Shall identify educational, networking, and promotional events that are either being offered by our members or will be of interest to our members.  Inform members about these events and coordinate an events calendar on the AOBTA website.
  8. Shall identify opportunities for our practitioners and instructors to present or promote at events.
  9. Shall carry out Organization business between board meetings.

10.  Shall have other such responsibilities and powers as directed by the Board of Directors within the scope of the Bylaws of The Organization. 

 
Legislative Director

Shall chair the Legislative Committee and shall have such powers as are necessary for the functioning of the Organization, as prescribed by the Rules, Guidelines, and Procedures, within the scope of the Bylaws of the Organization.

Duties:

  1. Shall chair the Legislative Committee, consisting of the State Chapter Legislative Chairs and others, which is responsible for the following:
    1. Establishing communication with legislative agencies.
    2. Remaining informed of any legislative activity that may impact the Asian Bodywork Therapy profession and report such activity to the Board of Directors.
    3. Establishing relationships with the legislative branches of massage, bodywork, and Oriental Medicine organizations and agencies.
  2. Shall oversee and support the State Representatives and State Chapter Legislative Chairs in their function of monitoring and engaging in legislative activities.
  3. Shall serve as a resource to the Board of Directors and The Organization in regards to the legislation of the Asian Bodywork Therapy profession.
  4. Shall carry out Organization business between board meetings.
  5. Shall have such other responsibilities and powers as directed by the Board of Directors within the scope of the Bylaws of The Organization

 
Director of COSP

Shall chair the COSP Committee and shall have such powers as are necessary for the functioning of the Organization, as prescribed by the Rules, Guidelines, and Procedures, within the scope of the Bylaws of the Organization.

Duties:

  1. Shall be an AOBTA Certified Instructor, preferably with COSP school or program experience.
  2. Shall Chair the COSP Committee and Co-chair meetings of COSP with the Director of Education.
  3. Shall oversee the COSP schools and programs to ensure that they meet and maintain the AOBTA guidelines for training, clinical practice, and ethical standards.
  4. Shall recruit new COSP members from existing independent ABT schools and programs, and from ABT programs within schools of Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture, bodywork, massage, or movement therapy.
  5. Shall review all new COSP applicants, guide them through the application process, and advise them on program adjustments that will enable them to meet COSP requirements.
  6. Shall foster consistent communication with COSP members.
  7. Shall support the development of Instructor and Teaching Assistant training within COSP schools.
  8. Shall encourage COSP members to offer CEU programs.
  9. Shall encourage lapsed COSP members to update their membership.
  10. Shall encourage COSP members to promote AOBTA membership to their students and instructors.
  11. Shall direct school and program based grievances to the Ethics Committee, when appropriate.
  12. Shall carry out Organization business between board meetings.
  13. Shall have other such responsibilities and powers as directed by the board of directors within the scope of the Bylaws of The Organization.
