Event Description

How does the concept of the Three Treasures inform the act of healing touch? How can they be sensed through touch? What do they reveal about the way of things? How can they help us to realize the wonder of being and a life fully lived?

In this workshop, we will go beyond the common Chinese medical cosmology of jing, qi, and shen and explore jing-qi-shen as the most basic felt sensations of the human condition: mass-time/motion-space. Rediscovering jing-qi-shen as a continuum of felt sensations gives us access to realizing the interchangeability of perception-action in our touch. Instead of affecting the body’s functioning (qi) by putting our touch intent (shen) inside the body (jing), we can reverse the order of perception-action by putting our intent in the space outside the body to activate the spontaneous re-patterning of qi. This method derives from the Daoist practice of the Golden Elixir (jindan), a practice that was historically associated with self-healing and long life. This workshop will show you how the jing-qi-shen cosmology of the Golden Elixir becomes the source code for all forms of bodywork.

In part one of the workshop, we will learn how to establish the felt sense of emptiness inside the body and the felt sense of space outside the body. This foundation is key to cultivating the stillness that elicits the releasing of qi (resonance) from jing (physical body) to surround the body. In part two of the workshop, we will learn how to use the spatial imagination (shen) through touch to affect contraction and expansion (qi) in the space outside the body (jing). We will work with the qi sensation around the body to generate immediate tangible effects in the body. In this approach, the meridians are re-perceived as a constellation of spatial fields where we can activate the resonance of qi and the consolidation of jing to bring forth a spontaneous transformation of yin and yang. When we integrate the perception of touch with movement in the spatial imagination, the body’s innate potential to resolve and remake itself can be guided effortlessly and joyfully.
