Membership Overview

Dear Future AOBTA® Member,

Thank you for your interest in the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA®).

We extend a warm welcome as we offer you professional, associate, or student membership status in this nation's largest Asian Bodywork Therapy association. We are a not-for-profit professional membership association supported by membership dues, contributions, and the time and talent volunteered by its members.

Founded in 1989, AOBTA® has grown rapidly and now serves close to fifteen hundred members who practice a variety of forms of Asian Bodywork Therapy (ABT). With members in all 50 United States of America and abroad, we are making our presence felt and voices heard globally. Its membership-elected volunteers on the Board of Directors govern AOBTA®. Our organizational structure includes the Council of Schools and Programs (COSP), State Chapters, and the Congress of Representatives — all of which provide ample opportunities for membership involvement and participation.

AOBTA® currently serves its members in a wide variety of ways and is always striving to add value to membership. A few of the benefits our association brings to its members are:

  • Representation of the interests, rights, and professional standards of Asian Bodywork Therapies
  • National and international recognition as a member of the Federation of Therapeutic Massage, Bodywork, and Somatic Practice Organizations
  • High-quality educational opportunities on national, international, regional and state levels
  • Legislative support and action-oriented representation at all governmental levels
  • Subscription to Pulse, our quarterly newsletter, (members receive a 10% discount for all advertising in AOBTA® publications)
  • Optional, affordable, professional liability, life, and disability insurance coverage (with group healthcare now available in some states)
  • Membership directory availability on line
  • Free listings of workshops offered by our members on the AOBTA® web site
  • Personal and professional growth opportunities through participation in the AOBTA® community through work on committees, task forces and offices at the state, regional and national levels

In addition, AOBTA® is very pleased to announce that Asian Bodywork Therapy is recognized and accepted by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). With the new Asian Bodywork Therapy certification exam created by the NCCAOM, our profession stands equally with the practices of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine as one of the three delivery systems of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Through the NCCAOM ABT exam, the professional practitioner has the opportunity to be Nationally Certified as a Diplomate in ABT.

We invite you to become part of our growing community. To apply for membership carefully review all of the enclosed information, complete the Membership Application form, and return it to us with the appropriate application fee, dues, and completed documentation or transcript forms.

If your training has been obtained through a school or program which is not yet a member of the AOBTA® Council of Schools and Programs, or if you have studied with a teacher who is not yet an AOBTA® Certified Instructor, you must have your transcript form reviewed and approved by an AOBTA® Certified Instructor prior to submitting your application to the national office.

If you need assistance with this, or with any other part of the application process, please do not hesitate to contact the national office. We will be happy to help you.

Your support and participation in AOBTA® is needed and appreciated. I look forward to serving as your Director of Membership and hope to meet you at our next National Convention.

Peace & Health,
Michelle Racich
Director of Membership
